Meet the Faculty

Katherine Yu, MD, FACP

Director of Palliative Care

Olive View-UCLA Medical Center

Clinical Professor of Medicine

David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

After completing residency training and the Kennamer Fellowship in GIM here at the Olive View-UCLA Program, Dr. Yu joined the faculty in 1991 and has dedicated her efforts in evidence-based clinical teaching on the inpatient ward service and in the primary care clinics. She has been an integral participant in the many facets of Internal Medicine program as key faculty and had dedicated her efforts on reforming the clinical operations of the hospital-based General Medicine clinics until 2009.

Motivated by her ongoing interest in caring for oncology patients, Dr. Yu spent nearly two decades managing patients with solid tumors in the Wednesday Oncology clinic. In 2009, her passion for optimizing care in patients with terminal and catastrophic illness shifted her focus towards bringing quality palliative care to the patient population at Olive View, and she launched one of the first Palliative Care consultation services in the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. The palliative care team now serves patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings through grants obtained from the California Health Care and UniHealth Foundations. She is board-certified in palliative and hospice medicine, and advocates for the education of housestaff in the acquisition of primary palliative skills for their future careers in medicine.

Dr. Yu continues to serve as an attending on the inpatient ward and general medicine clinic, she hopes to motivate more housestaff to choose general internal medicine as a career. Her future goals include delivery of timely palliative care to both patients with terminal malignancies and those with advanced illness requiring optimal symptom management and interdisciplinary intervention. Her focus is to ensure delivery of quality patient care in a holistic and patient-centered manner. She will also be concentrating her efforts on improving advanced care planning with the goal of expanding the process to the local communities.

Her passions and leisure time are spent on nature-related travel, exploring other cultures, gardening, cooking, swimming and Polynesian dance.
